Otto Derreth was trained as a horticultural technician in his hometown of Miltenberg and in the resort nursery in Bad Kissingen. After serving in World War I, he worked in both cities. After further training, he went to Osnabrück and lived in the United States for some time. In the 1920s he was an employee of Max Bromme, director of the horticultural department in Frankfurt am Main. After World War II, Derreth worked there together with Friedrich Heyer on the restoration of war-torn parks.
