Max Małkowiak was a graduate of the Secondary Vocational School of Railway in Poznan, and made his début in hockey with the youth team of Stella Gniezno. After World War II he played with Gniezno, then Railwayman and KKS Stella. From 1948-56 he was capped 13 times and scored two goals. In the 19 June 1948 match against Czechoslovakia Małkowiak scored the first ever international goal for the Polish national side. After his 1956 retirement from competition he became a trainer with MKS Gniezno, KKS Stella and Start. Małkowiak was given numerous awards, including the Polish Distinguished Master of Sports and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
