Henry Clifford attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a degree in economics in 1952. He prepped at Lawrenceville School, where he played soccer, tennis and track. He started college at Trinity College, where he played soccer, squash, and tennis, but transferred to Penn, where he captained the tennis team. In 1952 Clifford was runner-up in the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) tennis doubles. After college Clifford served briefly as an officer in the Marines.
