Ahmed Elmaghraby had dual US and Egyptian citizenship. He grew up playing in Egypt and was named to the Egyptian National Team at age 14, eventually playing in two World Cups for his birth nation. In 1993 he switched to the US National team, winning gold medals at the 1993 and 1995 US Olympic Festival, and competing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. During his international career Elmaghraby was capped 195 times for Egypt and the USA. He later became a youth hockey coach.
