Sam Ewing was from Philadelphia and a member of the Merion Cricket Club in 1932 when he played fullback for the Olympic field hockey team. Ewing was a Princeton graduate, class of ‘27, who later attended Penn Law School, but was an accomplished all-round athlete. He was a well-known soccer, tennis and squash player on the East Coast and while at Princeton he quarterbacked the football team for two years, as well as playing on the tennis team for four years and the basketball team for one year. Ewing practiced law until the outbreak of World War II, at which time he enlisted as a private. He eventually rose to the rank of major and received five campaign stars and the Bronze Star medal for his service. After the war, Ewing became associated with RCA, with whom he remained as an executive for many years. He also became influential in Philadelphia politics.
