Otto Steffers was born in the US but grew up playing hockey in the Netherlands. He moved back to the US at age 15 and played on the US Junior National Team from 1988-92. Steffers played at the US Olympic Festivals each year from 1989-95, winning three gold medals. He later earned a bronze medal at the 1995 Pan American Games, before his 1996 appearance at the Atlanta Olympic Games.
Steffers attended Goldey-Beacom College in Delaware. He later became a volunteer coach for the University of Maryland women’s field hockey team. Steffers’ grandfather, Cees Leenheer, competed at the 1928 Olympics for the Netherlands in water polo.
