Nigel Traverso grew up in Trinidad, growing up in Port-of-Spain, and played for two years as a teenager with the Trinidad national team. He emigrated to the United States with his mother and four brothers in 1977 and lived in Queens, New York. Traverso attended St. John’s University, and played hockey (field) with the New York Islanders field hockey club. After gaining US citizenship in 1982 he made the US national team and played for the United States at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, eventually retiring from the game in 1995.
In 2000 Traverso founded BAHF which sponsors men’s field hockey in the New York area and runs several tournaments each year, including the International Indoor Tournament in February each year and the Hockey Festival / Mayor’s Cup in late August. Traverso worked as a reinsurance consultant and lives on Long Island.
