Jack Turnbull had his first Olympic appearance in the 1932 lacrosse demonstration event. Four years later he was a member of the US hockey team at the Berlin Olympics. During his high school years Turnbull captained the lacrosse team but also played football and basketball. At John Hopkins, he also started playing ice hockey, and graduated with a degree in engineering, after which he started working for the American Radiator Company. After joining the Maryland National Guard, Turnbull was mobilized when the United States entered the war, and was eventually promoted to lieutenant-colonel. During World War II his B-24 bomber was shot down over Belgium in 1944; all crew members died of the injuries sustained during the crash. In 1965 Turnbull was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and is regarded as one of the best players ever.
