Eelco Wassenaar competed in hockey (field) for the USA at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Wassenaar was a Dutch citizen but was able to compete for the USA as he had an American mother and dual citizenship. He first played for the US National Team in 1992 and won one gold and three silver medals at the US Olympic Festivals. He also played nine years of club hockey in the Netherlands.
Wassenaar studied at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. He studied medicine and later did a two-year fellowship in the United States at the University of Washington. Wassenaar specialized in surgical oncology and gastroenterologic surgery. After his training he became an assistant professor and surgeon in Guelders, Netherlands. He is a member of the Dutch Society for Surgery (NVvH), the Dutch Society for Surgical Oncology (NVCO), and the Dutch Association for Gastro-Intestinal Surgery (NVGIC).
