Biography

Katalin Juhász-Nagy first played basketball before turning to fencing after World War II. A foil specialist, she won her first individual Hungarian national title in that event in 1957 and would go on to earn another in 1963, having captured a team gold medal the previous year. Her first major international competition was the 1957 Universiade, where she took gold individually and silver with the team. At the 1959 World Championships she took gold with the team and was then selected for the 1960 Rome Olympics, where she won silver in the team event. She took silver, gold, and silver in the team competition at the next three editions of the Worlds, as well as bronze individually in 1962 and 1963. She then won the team event at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and came fifth individually.

Juhász-Nagy won one more title, in the team event, at the World Championships in 1967, after taking a year off due to an injury sustained playing football. She then retired from active competition and, having earned a degree in chemistry from University of Szeged in 1956, spent the rest of her career working as an engineer.
