Born in the former colony of Portuguese Mozambique Maria Nápoles became a successful and pioneering foil fencer. Nápoles was the first female fencer to represent Portugal at the Olympics when she competed at the 1960 Roma Games. In her group she fought four bouts, but lost all of them, including one to the eventual gold-medallist Heidi Schmid.
