Adeline Gehrig competed for the New York Turnverein, where Yankee first baseman Lou Gehrig used to work out, but there is no truth to the oft-repeated rumor that they were related. Adeline Gehrig won the American Fencing League of America (AFLA) women’s foil title for four consecutive years, winning in 1920-23. In addition to fencing Adeline Gehrig was a well-known athlete in many sports. In 1922 women competed in a Women’s Olympiad in Paris sponsored by the French group, the FSFI (Fédération Sportive Féminine Internationale). Despite being almost 35-years-old, Gehrig led the US qualifying in May 1922 in the standing long jump, although she ended up not competing in Paris. She was also known to play baseball and basketball, and one journal article discussed her love of the outdoors. Gehrig worked as a stenographer at a New York railroad office during her fencing career.
