Fencer Kurt Ettinger was Austrian champion in foil (1923, 1929, and 1931) and sabre (1928 and 1931). He was a team member of the Austrian Olympic foil teams at the 1924 Paris and the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, reaching the second round on both occasions. Individually, he was eliminated in the foil in the semi-finals at both Games. Ettinger won foil a team silver medal at the 1933 World Championships, and bronze in 1931 and 1937.
Ettinger was an Austrian Jew who left Austria for Paris at the time of the German “Anschluss”. In May 1941 he went to the USA and became a US citizen, changing his first two names from “Kurt Erich” to “Curtis Thomas”. He served in the US Army during World War II from December 1942 to July 1943, and later died while on a family vacation at Innsbruck, Austria.
