Austrian fencer Ernst, Prinz zu Hohenlohe reached the quarter-finals in the individual sabre event at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. He was then eliminated as he lost his next round bouts to Hungarian Ervin Mészáros, German Friedrich Schwarz and Britain’s William Marsh.
Ernst zu Hohenlohe was a member of the royal family de Ratibor and Corvey. His grandfather was Wiktor I. Maurycy von Ratibor (1818-93), while his parents were Egon Moritz (1853-96) and Leopoldine von Lobkowicz (1867-1936). He had five siblings, three brothers and two sisters. His first wife, whom he married in 1922, was Adele von Caro (1899-1974). They divorced three years after the wedding, however, and Ernst’s only descendant, Egon Maria Alexander Karl Borromäus Leopold Moritz (1923-89), came from this marriage. His second wife was Consuelo Eyre (1909-85), whom he married in 1940.
