Georges Pouliot

As a student at McGill University, Georges Pouliot won three intercollegiate fencing titles (1946-1948), as well as national foil titles in 1948 and 1949 and a national sabre title in the latter year. He was selected to represent Canada in the team events of all three disciplines at the 1948 Summer Olympics, as well as individually in the foil and épée. Competing with Robert Desjarlais, Alf Horn, and Roland Asselin, he was eliminated in the opening round of all of these competitions, except for the team foil, where the Canadians survived to the quarterfinals. His final international competition was the 1950 British Empire Games, where he won a total of five medals: silver in the team sabre event, and bronze in individual sabre and foil and team foil and épée; in all of the team tournaments, he partnered with Desjarlais and Edward Brooke.

Pouliot graduated from McGill with a law degree in 1949 and became a lawyer, founding his own firm, Pouliot Mercure, in 1952. Specializing in commercial law, he built an impressive practice working with local businesses and served on the boards of numerous commercial and industrial corporations. He also helped found the Quebec Fencing Association. He was inducted into the McGill Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005 and continued to practice law well into his old age.
