Trained by Louis Renaud, Mahmoud Abdin began competing at the international level in 1928, the same year that he was third individually in the foil at the Egyptian national championships and fourth in the épée. This led to his selection for the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, where he was eliminated in the opening rounds of both the individual and team foil competitions, in the latter alongside Joseph Misrahi, Abu Bakr Ratib, Saul Moyal, and Salvator Cicurel. The following year, Abdin became the Egyptian foil champion and was sixth in épée, while in 1930 he was runner-up in the former. In 1931 he was certified as an international referee and placed second again nationally in foil.
Egypt boycotted the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, but Abdin was in top form in the leadup to the 1936 Berlin Games, winning both the Egyptian individual and team foil championships in 1935. He was runner-up in 1936, but still competed in both the foil and épée tournaments at the Olympics. In épée, he was eliminated in round one individually and in the team quarterfinals with Marcel Boulad, Mauris Shamil, and Hassan and Anwar Tawfik. In foil, he was eliminated in round one of the team competition alongside Shamil and Hassan and Anwar Tawfik, but lasted to the quarterfinals individually. In 1937, Abdin was national runner-up in épée, while in 1938 he was fourth in both the épée and foil and seventh in sabre.
Abdin attended the Olympics once more, in 1948, where he finished fifth with an Egyptian foil team that included Hassan Tawfik, Osman Abdel Hafeez, Salah Dessouki, Mahmoud Younes, and Mohamed Zulficar. By career, he was the headmaster of the French school in Zamalek, but also served as General Secretary of the Egyptian Fencing Club and worked as a fencing coach.
