Apart from being a well-known fencer, Jean-Joseph Renaud was also a referee at some 100 duels. Under the name of Joseph-Renaud, he wrote more than 60 novels.

Once considered to have competed in both 1900 and 1908, research in April 2021 by Taavi Kalju has shown this to be two separate athletes, Jean-Joseph Renaud (22020/1900) and Louis Renaud (138444/1908).
