Bertie Childs

Bertie Childs was a member of the newly formed Grosvenor Fencing Club that, five years after their formation, won the Savage Shield for the British Épée Team Championship in 1927. They went on to win it another seven times between 1928-37, with Childs as their captain in most of those years. He also won the individual British Épée Championship in 1928 and 1931, and competed at two Olympics. At the time of his death in 1960, he had been a member of the Épée Club for nearly 40 years.

When Childs won his first national title in 1928, his victory was such noteworthy news that journalists wishing to interview him had to do so from the top of one of the tallest buildings being erected in London at the time, because Childs was working on it as the operator of a huge crane. Dedicated to the sport of fencing, he officiated at many épée finals and was, for more than 16 years, the honorary secretary of the Grosvenor Club.
