Norman Casmir was born into a fencing family, as his father Erwin (1928-36) and hid grand-uncle Gustav (1904-06) also were Olympic fencers. Norman did not win medal like his relatives, and was eliminated in the second round of foil team and individual foil events at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. In 1953 and 1956 he was the German foil champion, and with Fecht-Club Hermannia of Frankfurt, he won the national team titles 1951-55, and alongside him in the 1952 winning team was his father Erwin.
