Pál Dunay was born into a true fencing family. His father was Bertalan Dunay, who competed at the 1912 Olympics, and his brother András was also an excellent fencer, winning two national championships.
During his career, Pál Dunay won a total of 14 national championships: 5 in épée (1 individual), 6 in foil (2 individual), and 3 in sabre. He achieved his greatest success in 1934, at the age of 25, when he won the individual épée World Championship (unofficial) at the Warszawa European Championships. In team foil he won a bronze medal at Lausanne in 1935 and finished fourth at Warszawa in 1934.
In épée Dunay competed at the 1936 Berlin Olympics both in individual and team events. In 1948 in London he finished fifth in both team foil and épée. He also performed successfully at the World University Championships, winning two golds, one silver, and four bronze medals.
Dunay completed his active sports career in 1954, after which he worked as a mechanical engineer. In 1960 he became a master of fencing in Germany, and in 1964 became head coach of the Egyptian fencing team. He lived in Germany after retirement.
