Tom Smith of Dublin first appeared in the fencing scene in the early 1940s. A member and past president of Achilles Fencing Club in Dublin, he was selected with fellow clubmate Nick Thuillier in 1948 to compete at the Olympic Games in London. Participating in the men’s individual foil event, he finished in last place of his pool. Smith continued to fence with the Achilles Club throughout the 1950s, competing internationally for Ireland on multiple occasions.
