In addition to winning the gold medal with the Italian sabre team, which made him the first Sicilian gold medalist, Francesco Gargano also reached the finals in the individual sabre and finished 11th. After the Olympics he concentrated more on coaching. In 1935 he moved to Sweden and opened a fencing school. Gargano trained the Swedish national team in the 1960s and 1970s, including World Champion and gold medalist Rolf Edling.
