Biography

Sigurd Mathiesen was a career officer who was conscripted in 1895. In 1901, he became a permanent Navy officer. From 1902, he was chief of the fortress artillery company at Oscarsborg near Svelvik in the rank of a captain. Later, he was a nautical assistant in the Maritime Office, rising to the rank of a major.

At the 1912 Olympic Games, Mathiesen competed in the individual épée event and was eliminated in round two. Married to Hjordis Bjercke, their daughter Ada later married the wealthy businessman Olav Paus (1912-1974), general manager of the Paus & Paus industrial group.
