Biography

Chilean fencer Luis Moreno dedicated his life to the sport as a competitor, coach, and administrator. Moreno was the first person from Chile to graduate as a Master of Arms from the Fencing and Swimming Course in Paris, France, where he studied from 1947 to 1956. During this time he was part of the national fencing team and was named as an alternate for the team épée event at the 1948 London Olympics, although he ultimately did not compete at the Games. He later worked as a coach of the Chilean fencing team for 20 years, training them in all three weapons.

During his long life Moreno held several high-profile positions, both domestically and internationally. At home he served as the President of the Círculo de Maestros de Armas de Chile for five years and was the President of the Chilean Fencing Federation from 1982 until 1988. On the international front he was the President of the South American Fencing Confederation from 1988 to 1992 and served as the Vice-President of the Chilean Olympic Committee from 1988 to 1999. Moreno was 97-years-old when he died in Santiago in January 2019.
