Tony O’Connor was a member of the first Irish fencing team to compete at the Olympics, at London 1948. Unfortunately, unlike the other five, he was an alternate and did not get to take part.
O’Connor went to the Olympics as the Irish foil champion, and three months before the Games was beaten into third place by winner Jacques Froucht of Paris, and runner-up Peter Williams of London in the Men’s Open Foil Championship of Ireland. The year after the Olympics, O’Connor won the Coupe CEP that was donated by the “Cercle d’Escrime de Paris” after a visit to Ireland in 1946. It was an event open to all Irish fencers (male and female), and O’Connor beat the Thuillier brothers Nick and Harry into second and third place.
O’Connor was born in Dublin, where he had a successful sales career, originally with Max Factor, and after emigrating to Canada in 1966 with Searle Pharmaceuticals, eventually becoming president and CEO before his retirement in 1986. O’Connor was the one-time treasurer of the Irish Fencing Federation.
