Biography

William Tagg was a lieutenant in the Leyton and Leytonstone Volunteer Fire Service, serving them for more than 28 years, having joined in 1881. At the time of his retirement from the service he was second officer and, upon leaving the force, was made an honorary member of the brigade.

Tagg, and engineer Charles Jones, were the two members of the brigade presented with special gold medals following their second placing in the International Volunteer Firefighting competition at the 1900 Paris Olympics. Tagg had his own plumbing and house decorating business in the Leyton area of London but after moving to Westcliff-on-Sea, he left his two sons to look after the business. Sadly Tagg died just three years after moving to the coast.
