Biography

Engineer Charles Jones and lieutenant William Tagg were the two members of the Leyton and Leytonstone Fire Brigade presented with special gold medals following their second placing in the International Volunteer Firefighting competition at the 1900 Paris Olympics. Jones joined the brigade in 1896, and regularly represented them at competitions at home and abroad. After winning a tournament at Paris in 1905, the brigade’s captain, Horatio Miller was awarded the Merit Medal of the French Government but, having previously been the recipient of this medal, he handed it over to his second officer Jones. In 1897 Jones invented and patented a hose cart which was to be a great aid to attending fires at an early stage, and the Leyton and Leytonstone Brigade was one if his first customers.
