A fencer, Rodolfo da Ponte was the first Paraguayan athlete to compete at the Olympic Games. He went to Mexico City in 1968 as the reigning South American Champion in foil. Da Ponte learned to fence from his grandfather who had been a fencing instructor in Italy. Rodolfo’s son, Enzo, also fenced at the Olympics, in 1992 at Barcelona. Rodolfo da Ponte developed COVID-19 and was hospitalized for pneumonia but eventually died from cardiac arrest.
