Biography

Bandy Zòlyomi was a Hungarian water polo player and coach. After starting his competitive career in Hungary, shortly after turning 20, he moved to Italy, joining Rari Nantes Napoli.

Zolyomi was a player-coach with the Napoli team, winning the Italian title in 1939 and 1941 and encouraging the sporting growth of Gildo Arena in the Neapolitan environment. Having overcome a series of misadventures during the war period, Zolyomi trained the Canottieri Olona in 1947, leading them to the Italian title.

After moving to Spain Zolyomi spurred the growth of Iberian water polo, first leading Barcelona (seven national titles) and then the national team. Returning to Italy, after coaching Napoli Canottieri and then Rari Nantes, he led the Italian national team to fourth place at the 1956 Olympics, then to victory at Roma 1960 and again to fourth place at Tokyo 1964. He ended his career in Spain, coaching the national team at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics.
