Teenage gymnast Vera Parsons was selected for the 1948 London Olympics. Sadly, she sprained her ankle two days before setting off from her home in Leeds for the Games. Agonisingly, she had to pull out of the GB team. Fellow Yorkshire gymnast Clarice Bell also had to sit-out the Games after she too sprained an ankle. Parsons was a member of the Woodhouse School of Physical Culture in Leeds and two of her club-mates, Pat Hirst and Bill McCreavie, were in the 1948 GB Olympic squad.
