William Gardner was a member of the Chippewa Tribe. He played football for Carlisle Indian School as did his younger brother, George.
William Gardner later earned a law degree from Dickinson Law School in 1907, but he went into coaching initially. In 1912 he became football and basketball coach and athletic director at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. He was later hired as athletic director at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, but stayed only a few years. Gardner served in World War I in the 338th infantry division, working as a coach at Camp Custer in Michigan, training new recruits before they were sent to Europe.
After the war Gardner coached at St. Edwards College in Austin, Texas. In 1926 he began work at the Treasury Department and was an agent in the Bureau of Prohibition. In 1930 he was recruited by Eliot Ness to join “The Untouchables” where he helped in the pursuit of mobster Al Capone. Gardner later worked as an IRS agent before moving to North Dakota.
