After starting out as fencer Emeric Arus became a proficient judoka and a renowned martial arts teacher. Arus represented Romania in the sabre events at the 1960 Roma Olympics, reaching the second round in the individual tournament and finishing in joint-fifth place in the team competition.
In 1968 Arus took up judo with the Institute of Physical Culture in București and later became a coach in judo, karate, and jujitsu. In 1974 he obtained his Shodan rank from the Romanian Judo Federation. Arus founded his own martial arts club in Oradea, Romania, coaching several junior champions with some of them going on to compete at the Olympics.
Arus immigrated to the United States in 1981 where he gained more ranks in judo and karate. By 1987 he had completed a karate instructor programme at Long Island University and obtained a master’s in science in physical education and sports management from Brooklyn College in 1991. In 2000 Arus was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the US Martial Arts Association.
