Anatoly Yakovlev was a lieutenant of the 15th Dragoon Alexandria Regiment, which was renamed to the 5th Hussar Alexandria Regiment. He received various military decorations competing as a fencer in the Warszawa (Warsaw) Military Fencing and Gymnastics Hall.
In 1912, Yakovlev competed in the Olympic Games in Stockholm in the individual foil event and was eliminated after losing all four of his bouts in round one.
