Sweden’s Carl von Essen was an expert épée fencer who won multiple medals at international tournaments in the 1960s and 1970s. Von Essen competed in the team event at the 1968 Mexico City and 1972 München Olympics, with Sweden finishing ninth and seventh, respectively. At the 1976 Montréal Olympics he won gold in the team competition along with compatriots Hans Jacobson, Rolf Edling, Leif Högström, and Göran Flodström. At the World Fencing Championships he won gold in the team épée in Grenoble (1974) and Budapest (1975). At the World Championships Von Essen also won four team bronze medals (1966, 1969, 1971, 1978), and an individual bronze in 1969.
