Bob Dow grew up in New Jersey and attended Admiral Farragut Academy, later graduating from the Newark College of Engineering. He also attended the US Military Academy but did not graduate from there. He eventually earned an MBA from Columbia University, and a masters’ in civil engineering from New York University. Dow competed for the New York Fencers Club.
Dow became a securities analyst, joining Lord Abbett & Co. in the early 1970s as a research analyst. He was named a partner in 1986 and became chief investment officer in 1995. In 1996 Dow became managing partner of Lord Abbett, holding that role until 2007 when he stepped down and was named a senior partner. He retired in 2012 and later bought a Bordeaux vineyard, Château Pabus.
