James Melcher graduated from Columbia University in 1961. He was US Champion in the épée in 1971-72. He represented the New York Fencers Club and later served as chairman of the club. Melcher stopped fencing in 1974 when he developed chronic fatigue syndrome, but eventually returned to the sport, saying it made him feel 10-15 years younger, and vowed to never give it up. In business, Melcher was in the financial world, eventually starting a very successful hedge fund, Balestra Capital.
