Curtis Shears began fencing at the Naval Academy where he won the IFA championship in foil individual and was a member of the championship foil team. He also won the AFLA national championship in outdoor épée individual in 1923. Shears earned a J.D. degree from NYU in 1932 and became an assistant U.S. Attorney in New York City. He was one of the founders of the Big Brother organization, and became an authority on nutrition, authoring three books on the subject.
