For many years, the 1904 Olympic accomplishments of Charles Tatham were considered to have been done as a Cuban citizen, as the Olympic records listed him as Cuban. In fact, Tatham came from an old family with roots in New York and Philadelphia. His grandfather, Benjamin Tatham, founded the lead manufacturing concern in Philadelphia, Tatham Bros., for which Charles Tatham worked his entire business life. Tatham won the AFLA national title in épée individual for three consecutive years from 1901, the first of only three fencers to accomplish this feat. In 1901 he won the foil individual as well. Tatham was the long-time treasurer of the New York Fencer’s Club and was a member of their national championship épée team in 1908.
