Biography

From 1975 to 1993 Manuel Pérez served as the head coach of the Cuba women’s basketball team, leading them to success at multiple international tournaments. Pérez had his first success at the Pan American Games when he led the team to bronze in 1975 before winning gold four years later. A year after their gold medal triumph, the Cuban team finished fifth at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, although only six teams competed in the women’s tournament. Despite this, Pérez continued to work with the team with them, winning bronze at the 1990 World Championships, silver at the Pan American Games (1983, 1991), and gold at the 1989 American Championships. His last major tournament was at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics where Cuba narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth after an 88–74 loss to the United States in the final round.
