In 1979, the United States seemingly put an end to Soviet dominance in women’s basketball, winning the World Championships in Seoul. However, the USSR did not recognize South Korea and because of that political situation, the Soviet team did not compete at that event. The Soviets were still un-matched at the 1978 and 1980 European Championships.

Any chance of a USA upset went wanting with the American-led boycott of the Moscow Olympics. There were again only six teams at the Olympics – the USSR, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Cuba, and Italy. The USSR was again led by Uljana Semjonova, who was not as dominant, as she had slowed down considerably since 1976. But her size, and the ability of the remainder of the team, meant none of the other five teams could compete, with the Soviets winning every game by over 30 points.
