Rajan Makkolath coached the Indian basketball team at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. He also led the national team at the 1982 Asian Games, and the FIBA Asia Championships in 1973, 1985, and 1989. He coached Madhya Pradesh and served as Associate Secretary of the Kerala Basketball Association (KBA) from 1976-85. He held several posts with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) over the years.
Makkolath served as a soldier in the Indian Army, reaching the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He was honored with medals for his role in the Indo-Chinese War.
