Donald McCormack was coach to the Irish basketball team making their Olympic debut at the 1948 London Olympics. It was not the best of debuts for McCormack and the team as they were well beaten in their four pool games, scoring just 70 points and conceding 281. Their record was the worst of the 23 competing countries, and they were placed last after two classification matches. Through 2024 it remains the only time Ireland sent a basketball team to the Olympics. At the time of the Games, McCormack was a commandant at the Curragh Command.
