Pavel Petera coached the Czechoslovak national basketball team from 1976-87, leading the team in over 450 games, including 12 European Championships, 5 World Championships, and 2 Olympics. He led them to a silver medal at the 1985 EuroBasket Tournament in Germany, and bronze medals at that event in 1977 in Liège and 1981 in Praha.
Petera graduated from FTVS and became coach of the Czechoslovakian national junior team from 1971-74. After he stepped down as national team coach in 1987, he spent two years coaching at Aris Thessaoliniki in Greece. He then became a sports journalist, serving as editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Sport in Praha.
