Mirko Novosel began his coaching career in 1966 with Lokomotiva of Zagreb. In 1971 he was named Yugoslav national coach for the cadets and juniors. Novosel was named national team coach in 1973, led Yugoslavia to the European Championship that year, and repeated that title in 1975. He led the Yugoslav team that won silver at the 1976 Montréal Olympics and later coached them to bronze at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
