Biography

Defender Karl Braunsteiner, whose brother August was also a footballer, was a member of the Austrian football team at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. The team won 5-1 against Germany in the first round but was eliminated in the quarter-finals 3-1 by the Netherlands. In the consolation round Austria beat Norway 1-0 and Italy 5-1 but then lost the final to Hungary 3-0.

Domestically, Braunsteiner played with Wiener (Vienna) SC and won eight international caps. He joined the Austrian Artillery as a gunner during World War I. After the Siege of Przemyśl he was taken as a prisoner-of-war and shipped to Toshkent, now part of Uzbekistan, where he died from typhoid fever in 1916.
