The son of a London painter and decorator, Ted Caws was a freestyle wrestler. A member of the Islington-based Ashdown Athletic Club, he was the Southern Area welterweight champion in 1948 and was a reserve for the London Olympics that year. A toolmaker and turner by profession, Caws was runner-up to Ashdown team-mate Don Irvine in the national championship in 1949.
