Biography

Forward Robert Merz was a member of the Austrian football team at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. The team won 5-1 against Germany in the first round but was eliminated in the quarter-finals 3-1 by the Netherlands. In the consolation round Austria beat Norway 1-0 and Italy 5-1 but then lost the final to Hungary 3-0.

Merz began high-level football in Austria with Währing in 1902, before joining Schwerathletik Wiener (Vienna) Sportvereinigung in 1904. He helped that club win a Challenge Cup against Magyar AC that year. In 1907 he joined the Jewish club Deutscher FC Prag, and won his first international cap with them in a match in June 1908 against England. Merz eventually won13 Austrian international caps, scoring five goals.

In 1914 Merz was commissioned as a lieutenant with Infantry Regiment No. 28, but he was killed in action while fighting in Poturzyn, Poland on 30 August 1914.
