In 1994 Martínez beat Martina Navratilova in the final of the singles at Wimbledon to become the first Spanish woman to win the title. She was also a two-time runner-up in the doubles at the French Open, partnering Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in 1992, and Jelena Dokic in 2001.
