Barbara Paulus

Barbara Paulus was an Austrian tennis player who played professionally from 1986 to 2001. Paulus achieved a career-best singles ranking of #10 in the world in November 1996, and a doubles ranking of #83 in the world in July 1989. She played for Austria’s Fed Cup team on 21 occasions.

Paulus won six WTA singles titles during her career with her first coming at the 1988 Swiss Open with victory against Lori McNeil. Her one and only WTA doubles title came later the same year in Sofia when she partnered Conchita Martínez, beating the duo of Sabrina Goleš and Katerina Maleeva.

Paulus reached the fourth round in the singles at all the Grand Slams apart from Wimbledon. Her best doubles performance came at the 1990 Australian Open when she reached the second round. Paulus competed in the singles at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, reaching the third round in Seoul before losing to Zina Garrison. Surgery for injuries forced Paulus to miss most of the 1992 and 1993 season. An elbow injury caused her to retire in 1998 before she made a brief comeback in 2001.
