Biography

Asparuh Donev started as a midfielder with the Septemvri Sofia club, but is best known for his 12 years (1964-75) with CSKA Sofia. During that time he won six Bulgarian League titles, and five Bulgarian Cup titles. Donev finished his career with three years with Sliven from 1975-78. He was on the Bulgarian national team from 1966-74, earning 25 caps, and a silver medal at the 1968 Olympics. He is considered one of the best defensive midfielders in Bulgarian football history.

Donev later became a club manager, starting with CSKA Sofia from 1979-83. He later moved around quite a bit, but had two further coaching stints with CSKA. He led them to five Bulgarian League titles from 1980-83 and 1992, and a Bulgarian Cup title in 1983. He retired from coaching in 2004 after a stint with Beroe Stara Zagora, and later became sports and technical director at CSKA.
